Syllogism for Cinema by Peter Kreeft

Gran Torino

Premise 1: The imagination is the most powerful force in human nature for good or for evil.

Premise 2: Of all the art forms in our culture cinema is the one that most powerfully uses the imagination.

Conclusion: Therefore cinema has the most power the most potential for good or evil of all art forms in our culture.

  1. I would agree. I would only add, that people are more susceptible to persuasion than they think.

Corporations don’t spend billions of dollars on silly advertisements, without knowing the science behind people’s psychology and they certainly know how to make you buy. Those annoying tunes are there to stay, and imprint the brand subconsciously.

The media are not held to the standard of the courts, so they can pretty much lie, and if you say a lie enough times, it becomes as good as the truth.

Movies also have a huge effect, and some are made with an agenda at hand, although I don’t think all movies have a malicious motive, but certainly some do.

    1. Philomath,

I couldn’t agree with you more. I appreciate your thoughtful comments. Films, subtle power of persuasion, can be used to shape the culture for ill or for good.

This was precisely the context in which Dr. Peter Kreeft made this statement. It was an exhortation to Christian filmmakers to engage the culture where it is and use the media to create art that conveys the true, the good and the beautiful.

  2. It is very True Caleb rubbish in rubbish out and this is the same with songs, you may remember I Posted a few times about the danger of the Lyrics.

I stopped watching T.V about 6 years ago and have not missed it, I follow God’s guideline even with Blogging, I will not focus on anything that will contaminate and pollute, we are to warn of danger but not promote it as our focus, some do this with Satan, which then makes him more powerful than God in their minds, in the end they live in fear and confusion which is Satan’s intention. God tells us very clearly what we are to focus on as we see confirmed in the Scripture below.

Philippians 4 ( 8- 9 ) Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy meditate on these things. The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.
